From Science to Beauty: The Story of DrySerum's Development
Discover everything that led to the creation of our dry serum – and how an ordinary nail played a role in the whole story.
A product at the intersection of cutting-edge science and real utility – that’s how DrySerum is described by Matěj Buzgo, a young scientist and head of research at RESPILON, who is behind the development of nanofibers, the foundation of dry serum.
However, the story of this cosmetic product began back in 2013. Since then, RESPILON has been dedicated to developing nanofiber products. The company's portfolio includes air conditioning filters, window screens, and face masks. And, of course, DrySerum.
The impulse to use nanofibers for health and aesthetic purposes, however, only came in September 2021, with the arrival of Matěj Buzgo.
From Theory to Practical Application
“I started developing and manufacturing nanofiber carrier systems while I was still in academia,” says Buzgo, who studied cell biology at the Faculty of Science, Charles University.
He focused on nanofibers even in his thesis ("Controlled Release of Autologous Growth Factors Using Nanofiber Carriers") and continued the topic in several startups. However, the theory was never successfully translated into practice. “Our collaboration always failed. It always ended with us having great technology but no products,” he says.
That changed when he joined RESPILON: “I joined the team because I saw that the company was producing functional products. Our collaboration is thus beneficial for both sides – I bring technological knowledge to the team, and RESPILON takes it and implements it into practice.”
How Does DrySerum Work?
The nanofibers that are part of our dry serum act as a carrier. This allows the encapsulation of concentrated active cosmetic ingredients (also known as nanoencapsulation) without preservatives, emulsifiers, or other additives. In the capsule, the active compounds face no degradation (even at high concentrations), so they can do without these chemicals.
The application then works on a simple principle: nanofibers made from the natural biopolymer pullulan dissolve upon contact with damp skin and release active ingredients.
These immediately penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and provide it with necessary nutrients and hydration. In addition, they stimulate the production of the body's own collagen. The result? Clinically confirmed, on average, a 20% reduction in wrinkles within 7 days.
A major advantage is the high adhesion of DrySerum masks and patches. This is also thanks to nanofibers: "They resemble certain structures involved in the construction of the human body. About 40% of the protein in the body is collagen with a nanofiber structure. So, in the end, it is something completely natural."
Beginnings? Even with a Nail
The basis of nanofiber production is electrostatic spinning. High electrical voltage carries a solution of polymers and active ingredients (with a certain electrical charge) to the opposite electrode. During this process, the water evaporates almost immediately, creating invisible nanofibers containing cosmetic ingredients.
The whole process takes place in a so-called electrospinner. The solution itself passes through a needleless electrode (also known as an emitter). But according to Matěj Buzgo, this is not always the case: "When we were setting up the first spinner at RESPILON, I didn’t have a proper emitter to produce nanofibers. At that moment, I spotted a nail with a flat head, so I used it. And it worked!”
We also based our nanofiber cosmetics production technology on Matěj Buzgo’s previous research. His work has been published in several major scientific journals – for example, the International Journal of Pharmaceutics and the Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.
Today, we produce nanofibers using our own manufacturing equipment, and our production is not limited to dry serum. We are aiming much further.
“We are actively moving towards healthcare, not only for products such as various skin covers or fillers but also for managing the delivery of active ingredients. Nanofibers can easily encapsulate active ingredients and release them as we want. This means we can ensure that active ingredients are released in the body or into the body immediately or after several hours, days, weeks, or even months,” says Buzgo.
Forms of DrySerum
In the meantime, we have fine-tuned DrySerum into two flagship products in collaboration with experts.
The goal of the 7-Day Program is comprehensive skin rejuvenation. The program combines 5 different masks that provide peeling, suppress free radicals, reduce wrinkles, and help the skin with overall relaxation, hydration, and firming. The masks are applied every morning, and three times during the week in the evening as well. The individual masks are also available separately.
The goal of the Magic Eye Patches program is to revitalize the eye contours and remove dark circles under the eyes. Over the course of a week, you will apply 10 patches around your eyes, which are identical and, in addition to the effects mentioned above, remove wrinkles and brighten the skin.
Thanks to the mentioned 20% wrinkle reduction, DrySerum is similar in effect to Botox injections. But as you might have guessed, its application is completely painless. Moreover, you can do it in the comfort of your home in just one minute – and you can enjoy smooth skin for the next 4 weeks.
